A house that gives every generation its own corner.
The family had outgrown two homes in two states before they bought this one. The brief was a house large enough to hold three generations and the rituals that they had carried through both moves.
We planned the house around three quiet centers. The grandparents' wing has its own garden door and a sitting room that does not have to be walked through. The middle floor is a kitchen and a long table. The upper floor belongs to the children, with a study at the end of the hall that the family agreed would be the no-screens room.
The materials are warm and forgiving. Painted millwork, dark stained oak, plaster, and a single navy felt-lined library on the ground floor. Lighting is layered and low. The dining room is the only room in the house with no overhead light at all.
